360 St Jacques was - at the time it was built - the highest building in the British Empire. Formerly known as the Royal Bank Building, it was designed by the York and Sawyer (a prestigious New York architecture agency) with S. G. Davenport, the bank's architect. The main banking floor has 45 feet of height and is decorated in Italian Renaissance style, with handcut marble mozaics, and the building was meant to express the opulence and prosperity of the rapidly growing financial institution. It is still, to this day, a desirable address for those who want to be in Old Montreal.
